DNA 2010; International Conference on DNA Fingerprinting in Crime Investigation- A pioneering event in the History of Forensic Science

The 2-day conference, “DNA 2010- The Science of DNA Fingerprinting in Crime Investigation” from 29th October to 30th October, 2010 at IETE Auditorium, Osmania University, Hyderabad was organized by ioAxis DNA Research Centre, Tarnaka, Secunderabad. BioAxis DNA Research centre operates from Hyderabad and has alaboratory at Gomati nagar in Lucknow. The conference opened traditionally with lighting the lamp by the dignitaries present at the function. Prominent personalities present at the inauguration were Dr. Lalji Singh, former director of CCMB and Bhatnagar Fellow 2009, Dr Amit Kumar CEO, BioAxis DNA Research Centre, Mr. O.N.Murty, Director, APFSL, Dr. Pradeep Srivastav (CDRI), Dr. G.K. Goswami (IPS,Lucknow), Mr. Rahul Patel (Bode Tech, USA) and others. Dr. Shakuntala Bulusu (Research Head, BDRC) welcomed the guests and Dr. Sabiha Khan (Conference Secretary, BDRC) spoke about the events that lead to the organization of the conference. Dr. Amit Kumar, Director and CEO, BDRC spoke about the need for DNA forensics in crime and explained how DNA gained recognition as clinching and decisive evidence. On a global scale, the availability of this technique and its refinement to a stage where it would become foolproof could act as a deterrent to certain kinds of crimes, he said. At the end he expressed a strong wish that his organization, the BioAxis DNA Research Centre will work on its mission towards making this science useful to common man and bring about awareness in the society for its responsible use. Dr. Lalji Singh acted as Chief Guest of the inaugural and delivered a Keynote address on “Genetic diversity in Indian populations and its health implications”. In his lecture he highlighted the genetic variability across the Indian subcontinent and also explained that many groups in modern India descend from a small number of founding individuals, which have since been genetically isolated from other groups for thousands of years, the fact which has medical implications for Indian populations. He also spoke briefly about his brainchild, the Genome Foundation, and explained its activities. The event was the second conference of the DNA series organized by BioAxis DNA Research Centre, following the great success of DNA2009 and attracted the audience not only from India but also from USA, Iran, and Dubai etc. In all, 61 DSPs and 25 Senior Inspectors of police from Andhra Pradesh Police Department attended this conference, in addition to over 120 student participants from various academic institutions. Eminent speakers from the field of forensics delivered their interesting lectures on the first day of the conference. Dr Pradeep Kumar Srivastav (Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow) spoke on “DNA and crime investigation- are we ready to face the challenge?” In his lecture he discussed about using SCIENTOONS, a novel concept in science communication for DNA fingerprinting technique, the methodology involved and its future prospects in an interesting manner. Mr.Rahul Patel (Bode Tech, USA) spoke on “Development of an Automated and Reliable System for the Collection, Processing, and Archiving of Buccal DNA Reference Samples for a DNA Database”. In his talk he evaluated and compared products currently available to streamline these procedures and made recommendations on important criteria for the selection of a Buccal DNA Collection system. Mrs. .Sharda Avadhanam Deputy Director, Forensic Science, AP Police Academy, gave an interesting lecture on “Different exhibits encountered in scene of offence-the value of DNA evidence” and how DNA evidence in the form of saliva, blood, skin tissue, hair, and semen are often recovered from crime scenes and can be crucial to the investigation of sexual assaults and other violent crimes. The program ended on the first day with an informative lecture by Dr.Madhusudan Reddy (Staff Scientist and Group Head, Center for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad) who spoke on “DNA profiling- based disaster victim identification in India”. He explained how proper identification of dead bodies and assigning of the mortal remains to their relatives can be accomplished by comparing the DNA profiles of the body parts or skeletal remains with those of reference or relatives’ samples. Several posters were displayed on the same day by enthusiastic participants on various themes related to DNA Forensics which were judged by experts for awards to be given on the concluding day.

Following the great success of the first day, BioAxis DNA Research Centre, Hyderabad moved on to the second and final day of the conference. The second day was loaded with equally educative and exciting lectures exploring DNA Fingerprinting to its depth with the enlightening lectures by Dr.Sunil Verma, Dr. G.V. Jagadamba, Dr. G.K. Goswami and Dr. Thangraj, on various relevant topics. Dr Sunil Verma, Scientist, CCMB in his talk titled “From Sequences to the Science for Justice and More” explained how wildlife crime detection depends on successful identification of the species and elaborated on the molecular tools that his team developed to identify an organism from a biological sample of an unknown animal origin which helps in judging the severity of wildlife crime by the Wildlife law enforcement agencies and the judiciaries. Looking at the interest of Audience the history was created by establishing a new Wildlife foundation, many attendees donated for the noble cause of conserving wild Life Animals. Dr PK Sruvastava donated the first donation for the foundation. BioAxis DNA Research centre also donated in the foundation. Dr Jagadamba, Faculty, Forensic Science, AP Police Academy, delivered a lecture on “DNA evidence - forensic significance” and detailed the methods used in their laboratory for DNA typing and also discussed the significance of STR profiles. Dr G K Goswami, IPS, SSP, RPf, spoke on “Legal Issues Related to DNA Fingerprinting in Criminal Justice System" and introduced the audience with the pertinent laws and orders and DNA Bill. The last of the series was an informative lecture on “DNA Fingerprinting: What markers to select, When and Why?” by Dr. Thanga Raj, Scientist, CCMB, in which he explained the significance of the selection of appropriate genetic markers for different cases. The valedictory session had Dr. K K Sinha, Former Director, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd., as the chief guest who gave a valedictory address and gave away the 3 best posters awards. Sangeeta Aditya, Central Forensic Science Laboratory was nominated as Young Scientist Awardee for DNA 2010. Best Poster award was grabbed by Vasavi Rama of University of Hyderabad followed by V B Parulekar from forensic Science Laboratory Mumbai and Roozan Parvez from St Xeviers Mumbai. Dr. Amit Kumar, Director BDRC and Dr. Shakuntala Bulusu Research Scientist, BDRC, gave vote of thanks and were congratulated by the learned dignitaries for the successful organization of the event. Overall, the entire 2-day duration of the program was a compact package of awareness to different dimensions of DNA, discussing in detail, the recent trends in DNA Fingerprinting, role of Forensic Science Laboratories, DNA Databanking, Population genetics of wild life forensics etc. BioAxis DNA Research Centre has a branch office in Gomati Nagar Lucknow.

Dr Rajgopal Srinivasan, Tata Innovation Labs (TCS)

Rajgopal Srinivasan heads the Informatics offerings of the Life Sciences R&D division at Tata Consultancy Services. A graduate in Chemistry from The Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, Raj holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in the USA. Following post-doctoral stints at Washington University in St. Louis and Johns Hopkins Medical School, he was a research professor at the Johns Hopkins University in the department of Biophysics till 2003. He joined TCS in 2003 as part of its Corporate R&D Center in Hyderabad, India. An active researcher, he is the author of several publications and holds an international patent. His research interests are in the areas of protein structure prediction, use of NLP techniques for information extraction and search and understanding the causal effects of genotype on phenotype.

Dr R.Narayanan, Tata Innovation Labs (TCS)

Dr. R. Narayanan’s research interests are in developing computational models for predicting absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity of new chemical entities, correlation of physical properties of new chemical entities with their biological effects and in silico lead generation. Dr. R. Narayanan, has been involved in drug discovery research in several capacities, in Indian and multinational companies since 1996. He has led medicinal chemistry programs in various therapeutic areas and has wide experience in the areas of hit identification, lead identification, and lead optimization. Dr. R. Narayanan obtained his Master's degree in Bio-Chemistry and Ph.D degree in Organic Chemistry in 1986 and 1993 respectively, both from the University of Madras.

Dr Sunil Kumar Verma , Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad

Dr. S. K. Verma is an Indian Scholar and Scientist currently posted in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), India. He did his Ph.D. in Medical Oncology from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. Other than authoring many research papers and book chapters, Dr. Verma has received several prestigious National and International Awards and Honors. Mentioning a few: The BioAsia Innovation Award-2009; CSIR Technology Award for Life Sciences-2008; DST-DFG Lindau Nobel Laureates Award-2003; Emerging Forensic Scientist Continental Award-1999 from the International Association of Forensic Sciences in USA; Commonwealth Scholarships 2003; DBT Scholarships 1995-97 and ICAR Scholarships 1991-95. Most recently, Dr. Verma has been admitted as the Fellow of Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin and the Research Ambassador of DAAD (German Academic Exchange) to promote the bidirectional research endeavors between India and Germany. Dr. Verma’s research interests include the studies of signal transduction pathways in the human health and disease, in particular the tuberculosis and several human malignancies prominent in Indian sub-continent. He is also continuing his interests in Wildlife Conservation and Wildlife Forensics, and is one of the discoverers of popular Universal Primer Technology for Wildlife Identification (US Patent 7141364), which later became famous as ‘DNA bar-coding’.

Dr Amit Kumar, BioAxis DNA Research Centre (BDRC) Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad

Dr. Amit kumar is Resource Development Chair, IEEE Hyderabad Section and CEO of BioAxis DNA Research Centre Hyderabad. He obtained his PhD in Applied Bioinformatics in 2007. He was nominated as “Pioneers in Genomic education 2010” by Ocimum Biosolutions Hyderabad India. His responsibilities as CEO and CSO are to provide leadership towards maintaining BioAxis DNA Research centre’s excellence in real-world applications of DNA Forensics, Biotechnology, and other Bioinformatics and computational intelligence methods. Eligibility

M.Sc. degree in any area of Life Science/Chemical sciences

(Note: M.Phil candidates may complete their PhD within 1-1.5 years)

Written Test and Interview

All the candidates need to appear for an online written test on 4th October, 2010. Candidates qualified in the written test will have to appear for Telephonic interview on 6th October, 2010. Candidates selected in the interview will be called for discussions with Scientists at BDRC regarding allotment of projects for the Ph.D. programme.

Note: Candidates who have qualified in CSIR-UGC NET Fellowship or ICMR-JRF or DBT-JRF are exempted from the online test and can also walk in on the day of the interview (6th October, 2010) in BDRC along with proof of their qualification.

Open Source Project Publication Programme at BioAxis DNA Research Centre Pvt Limited Hyderabad; Oppurtunity for Young Biotech Researchers

Aug 10, 2010 – BioAxis DNA Research Centre private ltd announced Open source project Publication programme especially for the students, Research scholars, young scientists and Researchers today. As per Mr Anukul Mishra- Manager Operations, this programme is unique of its kind and all the projects completed under this programme will be published in peer reviewed National and International journals. As per the training division BDRC more than 3000 trainees have undergone trainings/projects with BDRC as yet but most of the students pursuing Biotechnology and other advance life science subjects in our country are not well exposed to the quality Research skills. They don’t have proper knowledge what a Publication/Patent is? What is its importance? As a result when students complete studies and come into the market searching for jobs they find themselves nowhere. The companies don’t call them for interviews, even if they reach interview most of them fail to crack it. In present Biotechnology market scenario if one wants to get good job in this field, they have to have good publications to their credit to prove their research ability along with the educational eligibility.


Open Source Project Publication Programme (OSPPP) is an initiative in the direction to provide hardcore training on current Research skills required by different life science organizations and companies. The maximum of 75 people will be selected for this programme after the evaluation of their Research Proposals. Students will be allotted the groups as per their quality of synopsis and their Research Interest if selected. Top 5 shortlisted students will have an opportunity to undergo this programme free of cost. Final year/semester students are eligible to apply for these projects.

A poster exhibition will be arranged during the Symposium.

Initial submissions for the theme of the poster exhibition should be in the form of 1-3 pages.

Submissions should be sent as plain text files or as Word/PDF documents, single-spaced and set in Times New Roman 12 point font.

Postal and electronic mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers must be included. Submission will be accepted only in Microsoft Word or PDF format.

Candidates whose posters have been selected will be intimated by an e-mail from the Symposium Secretariat.

Best three posters will have a chance to be presented on the first day of the conference. (Session P01)

Final Posters after the acceptance should follow A0 dimensions: 0.84 m (width) x 1.18 m (height).

Limited number of accommodation is available at IIIT Guest house on payment basis. Confirmation of accommodation will be totally on first come first serve basis. There are number of guest houses, lodges and hotels are available in HITEC City area (nearest to the Symposium venue) since it is one of the most famous IT and Education hub in the city.

TRAVEL

Hyderabad is well connected from all the locations in India by road/train/air. Railway stations being Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Kachiguda. Major locations throughout the world are also well connected by aerial routes. Rajiv Gandhi international airport is just 30 kms from the symposium venue. Hyderabad city is laid down with places of interest. Located in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, the city houses a plethora of attractions.
